Supporting Therapy Dogs in classrooms.

Delta Society Australia

Delta Therapy Dogs is a not-for-profit organisation that believes in the power of connection and the undeniable bond between humans and dogs. Its evidence-based Classroom Canines program sees trained volunteers go into primary and high schools with their lovable Therapy Dogs on a weekly basis.

“The dogs won’t judge them if they stumble over a word, which really helps those who may be a little anxious or nervous about reading out loud to people.”

The Therapy Dogs attend specific lessons, large group sessions or one-on-one sessions with individual children who are working on specific goals agreed with educators. These may include literacy development, motor skills or social skills. Sometimes, Therapy Dogs are simply there to help improve a child’s mental health and motivation.

Thanks to Sheargold Foundation, Therapy Dogs have been making regular visits to Iona College, a Roman Catholic high school for boys in Brisbane. Teacher, Mrs Vardanega, says the dogs have really boosted the children’s reading skills. This is just one of many locations we support through the Classroom Canine program.
